29 Marrakech Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors (2026 Local Guide)

Narrow souk alley with lanterns and handicrafts in Marrakech medina

Quick answer

Top Marrakech tips: pre-book your airport transfer, carry cash in small dirham notes, agree prices before any service, visit monuments at opening time, rest in the afternoon heat, dress modestly, use licensed guides, eat at busy stalls and download an offline map of the medina.

After years of welcoming travellers to Marrakech, we hear the same "I wish I had known" stories. Here are 29 tips to make your first visit smoother.

Arrival and money

  1. Pre-book your airport ride. A fixed-price transfer costs €15 and the driver walks you to your riad.
  2. Riads are hidden. Cars cannot enter most medina alleys; share your riad's location before arrival.
  3. Bring euros, change in Morocco. The dirham is a closed currency.
  4. Use bank ATMs inside or next to banks; they are safer.
  5. Carry small notes and coins for taxis, tips and entry fees.
  6. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, not in souks.

Getting around

  1. Petit taxis (beige) must use the meter in town; insist politely or agree the price first.
  2. Walk the medina — it is the only way. Download an offline map.
  3. Watch for motorbikes in the alleys; step aside when you hear a horn.
  4. Calèches (horse carriages) leave from near the Koutoubia; agree the price and duration.

Timing

  1. Start early. Monuments open around 9:00; groups arrive by 10:30.
  2. Rest from 13:00 to 16:00 in summer.
  3. Souks wake up late, around 10:00.
  4. Friday midday is quieter because of prayers.
  5. During Ramadan, restaurants may close during the day in the medina; evenings are festive.

Etiquette

  1. Dress modestly — see what to wear in Morocco.
  2. Ask before photographing people.
  3. Use your right hand to eat and to give or receive.
  4. Non-Muslims cannot enter most mosques.
  5. Learn three words: salam (hello), shukran (thank you), la shukran (no thanks).

Food and health

  1. Eat where locals eat — busy stalls are the freshest.
  2. Drink bottled or filtered water.
  3. Sunscreen and a hat are essential from April to October.
  4. Pharmacies (green cross) are excellent for small problems.

Avoiding hassle

  1. Say "la, shukran" and keep walking if someone insists.
  2. Agree prices before any service — henna, photos, guides, taxis.
  3. Use licensed guides like those on our medina walking tour.
  4. Ignore "closed road" stories.

Beyond the city

  1. Leave Marrakech for a day. The Agafay desert at sunset is 45 minutes away, the Atlas an hour. See the best day trips from Marrakech.

FAQ

Should I exchange money before going to Marrakech?

You cannot buy dirhams abroad in most countries. Exchange at the airport or a bureau de change in town, or withdraw from ATMs.

How much should I tip in Marrakech?

About 10% in restaurants, 10–20 MAD for porters, and for guides and drivers roughly 10% of the tour price if you are happy.

Is it rude to refuse mint tea?

No, a polite 'la, shukran' is fine, though accepting a glass is a nice gesture when visiting a home.

Can I drink alcohol in Marrakech?

Yes, in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars, mainly in Gueliz and Hivernage. Do not drink in the street.
