Atlas Mountains, Morocco — travel guide photo

The High Atlas from Marrakech

The Atlas range runs some 2,500 km across North Africa, and its highest section, the High Atlas, rises directly south of Marrakech. On clear winter mornings you can see the snow from the city's rooftops. The valleys are home to Amazigh (Berber) communities who still farm stepped terraces and build houses of rammed earth and stone, and who welcome visitors with mint tea and fresh bread baked in clay ovens.

Ways to experience the mountains

Mountain weather changes fast: bring a warm layer even in May, and good shoes for village paths. Our Atlas Mountains guide covers every valley.
