Sahara desert tours & travel guide

The orange dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga reach about 150 m high and change colour every hour — the Morocco most travellers dream about, two days' drive from Marrakech.

Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay?

Morocco's Sahara is not one place. Erg Chebbi, beside the village of Merzouga, is the iconic sea of high orange dunes and the most accessible by road. Erg Chigaga, past M'Hamid, is wilder and reached only by 4x4. Zagora, closer to Marrakech, offers palm groves and smaller dunes — fine for a 2-day trip. The Agafay "desert" outside Marrakech is a stony plateau without dunes, perfect for an evening. Compare them in Agafay vs Merzouga vs Zagora.

A night in the dunes

The magic happens at sunset: you ride a camel for about an hour into the dunes, climb a crest to watch the light fade, then eat a tagine by the fire while musicians play Gnawa rhythms. Without light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible. At dawn the camels take you back for breakfast. Our 3-day Sahara tour is the classic route; the 4-day version adds a full day in Merzouga and a second night under the stars.
