Ourika Valley Guide 2026: Waterfalls, Villages and How to Visit from Marrakech

Ourika river and green valley with Berber villages in the High Atlas

Quick answer

The Ourika Valley is a green High Atlas valley about 60 km (1 hour) south-east of Marrakech, following the Ourika river to the village of Setti Fatma, where a guided hike leads to a series of waterfalls. Visit on a day trip from €25, with stops at a Berber house and an argan cooperative; spring has the strongest waterfalls and summer is 8–10 °C cooler than Marrakech.

The Ourika Valley is the most visited corner of the High Atlas — and for good reason: in one hour you swap Marrakech's heat for cool river air, green terraces and waterfalls.

Getting there

The road leaves Marrakech towards the south-east, crosses the Haouz plain and enters the valley at Tnine Ourika, then follows the river through Aghbalou to Setti Fatma. Options:

What to see on the way

  • A Berber house: families show how they live, bake bread and serve mint tea.
  • Argan cooperative: women grind argan kernels by hand; taste amlou and buy cosmetic or culinary oil.
  • Tnine Ourika Monday market: a lively rural souk of vegetables, spices and livestock (Mondays).
  • Saffron and herb gardens in some villages.

The Setti Fatma waterfalls hike

From the village, a local guide leads you across the river and up a rocky path to the first waterfall (about 30–45 minutes). Fitter walkers continue to the higher falls with some scrambling. Wear shoes with grip and bring water; cafés along the way sell drinks and tagines.

When to go

  • February–May: strongest waterfalls, blossoms, green landscapes.
  • June–September: the cool escape from Marrakech; busy at weekends.
  • Winter: quiet, cold mornings, snow on the peaks above.

Ourika or Imlil?

Ourika is livelier, greener and has waterfalls; Imlil is quieter, higher and better for walking with Toubkal views. Read the Imlil travel guide and our ranking of the best day trips from Marrakech.

FAQ

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?

About 60 km, roughly one hour by road to the village of Setti Fatma at the end of the valley.

How many waterfalls are there in Ourika?

Setti Fatma is known for seven waterfalls; most visitors reach the first one or two on a guided hike of 1–2 hours.

Do I need a guide for the waterfalls?

It is recommended: the path is rocky and not always obvious. Local guides at Setti Fatma charge a small fee and are often included in tours.

Is the Ourika Valley safe in rainy weather?

Avoid the riverbed after heavy rain or storms in the mountains, when flash floods can occur. Tour operators adapt the programme to the weather.
