Imlil Morocco Travel Guide 2026: Hikes, Villages and Toubkal National Park

Imlil village and the Toubkal massif in Morocco's High Atlas

Quick answer

Imlil is a mountain village at about 1,740 m in the Toubkal National Park, 70 km (1 h 30) from Marrakech and the starting point for Mount Toubkal. Visitors come for day hikes through Berber villages such as Aroumd, the Tizi n'Mzik pass and the Imnane valley, or for overnight stays in guesthouses. Guided day trips start at €25.

Imlil is where the High Atlas feels truly alpine: a cluster of earth-and-stone houses among walnut trees, mules on the paths and the snowy Toubkal massif filling the horizon.

Getting there

From Marrakech the road crosses Tahanaout, the Moulay Brahim gorge and Asni before climbing the Rheraya valley to Imlil (1,740 m). Allow 1 h 30. Choose a guided Imlil and three valleys day trip, a private transfer to Imlil, or grand taxis via Asni.

Best day hikes

  • Aroumd loop (2–3 h): cross the valley floor to the village of Aroumd at about 1,900 m, with views up the Mizane valley towards Toubkal.
  • Tizi n'Mzik pass (4–5 h): a steeper climb to 2,489 m with panoramas over the massif.
  • Imnane valley (half day): quieter villages and terraced fields east of Imlil.
  • Sidi Chamharouch (5–6 h return): the shrine on the Toubkal route, a good taste of the summit trail.

Where to stay

Imlil and Aroumd offer simple guesthouses with home cooking, plus a few boutique lodges with views. A night in the valley gives you sunset over the peaks and an early start for longer walks or the Toubkal 3-day trek.

When to go

Spring brings cherry blossom and green terraces; autumn the walnut harvest. In summer Imlil is pleasantly cool. In winter snow can block higher paths — go with a guide.

Rules and tips

  • Foreign hikers in the Toubkal National Park must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide.
  • Bring layers: temperatures drop quickly in the afternoon.
  • Buy snacks and water in Imlil; options are limited higher up.
  • Respect village life — ask before taking photos.
