Climbing Mount Toubkal: Routes, Difficulty and Seasons (2026 Guide)

Trekkers on the rocky route to the summit of Mount Toubkal in the High Atlas

Quick answer

Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) is climbed from Imlil (1,740 m) via the refuge at about 3,200 m, usually in 2 or 3 days. It is non-technical from roughly June to October but physically demanding; from December to March crampons, an ice axe and a winter-qualified guide are needed. Guided 2-day treks start at about €130 per person.

Jebel Toubkal is the roof of North Africa and one of the most rewarding "big" summits you can reach without technical climbing. Here is what our mountain guides tell every trekker.

The classic route

  1. Marrakech → Imlil (1,740 m): 1 h 30 by road.
  2. Imlil → Aroumd → Sidi Chamharouch → refuge (≈3,200 m): 5–6 hours on a good mule track, about 1,450 m of ascent.
  3. Refuge → summit (4,167 m): 3–4 hours before dawn on scree and rock, nearly 1,000 m of ascent.
  4. Summit → Imlil: 5–6 hours of descent.

The two refuges (the Toubkal Refuge and Les Mouflons) offer dormitories and meals.

2 days or 3 days?

  • 2-day trek: the fastest option; long, demanding days. Book the 2-day Toubkal trek.
  • 3-day trek: a first night in Imlil with an acclimatisation hike — much better for first-timers at altitude. Book the 3-day Toubkal trek.

Difficulty and altitude

Fitness is the key: you should be comfortable hiking 6–8 hours with a daypack. Altitude sickness (headache, nausea) can appear above 3,000 m; walk slowly, drink a lot and tell your guide about any symptoms. The 3-day option reduces the risk.

Seasons

Period Conditions
June–September Snow-free, warm days, cold nights at the refuge
October Often excellent, first snow possible late in the month
November–March Winter mountaineering: crampons, ice axe, experienced guide
April–May Spring snow on the upper slopes; check conditions

What to bring

Hiking boots, trekking poles, warm layers (fleece, down jacket, hat, gloves — even in summer the summit is cold at dawn), a headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, a 30-litre daypack and a sleeping bag (rental available). Mules carry the heavier bags.

Rules and costs

Foreign trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide. Guided treks with transfers, mules, refuge nights and meals start at about €130 per person for 2 days. Travel insurance covering trekking to 4,200 m is strongly recommended.

FAQ

How hard is it to climb Mount Toubkal?

It is a hard but non-technical trek in summer: long days with significant ascent at altitude. Good fitness matters more than climbing experience.

Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal?

Yes, Moroccan rules require foreign visitors to be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide in the Toubkal National Park.

When is the best time to climb Toubkal?

June to early October for snow-free conditions; April–May and November can still have snow. Winter ascents need technical gear and experience.

How many days do you need for Toubkal?

Two days is the minimum from Marrakech; three days with an acclimatisation night in Imlil is more comfortable and improves summit success.
