Renting a Car in Morocco 2026: Rules, Prices, Roads and Tips

Open road through Moroccan landscapes on a self-drive road trip

Quick answer

To rent a car in Morocco you need a passport, a valid driving licence (an International Driving Permit is recommended) and a credit card for the deposit; the minimum age is usually 21. Economy cars cost roughly €25–45 per day. Roads and motorways are good, but drive carefully in towns, avoid driving at night in the mountains and use guarded parking near the medinas.

A rental car gives you total freedom in Morocco: stop at every kasbah, picnic in the gorges, change plans on a whim. Here is what you need to know.

Documents and requirements

  • Passport
  • Driving licence from your country (an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside it)
  • Credit card in the driver's name for the deposit
  • Minimum age usually 21, sometimes 23–25 for larger cars

Prices in 2026

Vehicle Per day (approx.)
Economy (Dacia Logan, Renault Clio) €25–45
Compact SUV (Dacia Duster) €40–65
4x4 (Toyota Prado, Land Cruiser) €80–120
7–9 seat minivan €70–110

Check what insurance covers and the deposit amount; full cover reduces the excess. We offer cars delivered to Marrakech airport or your hotel — see Morocco car rental.

Roads and rules

  • Motorways (Casablanca–Marrakech–Agadir, Casablanca–Rabat–Fes–Tangier) are excellent, with tolls.
  • National roads are generally good but busy with trucks; mountain passes like the Tizi n'Tichka are winding.
  • Speed limits: about 120 km/h on motorways, 100 on main roads, 60 or less in towns.
  • Police checkpoints are common at town entrances: slow down, have documents ready.
  • Priority: traditionally cars entering a roundabout may have priority; watch the signs and drive defensively.

Parking near medinas

Cars cannot enter the medinas. Use guarded car parks (with a parking attendant in a vest) near the gates; pay the attendant a small fee and keep valuables out of sight.

When a driver is better

For the Sahara, the Atlas passes and multi-city trips, many travellers prefer a car with driver: no stress, no parking, and a local who knows the roads. Compare with our 5-day Morocco tour or a fully private 7-day tour, or book airport transfers only.

FAQ

Is it safe to drive in Morocco?

Main roads and motorways are generally good. Drive defensively in cities, watch for pedestrians, animals and slow vehicles, and avoid night driving on mountain roads.

What are the speed limits in Morocco?

Typically 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads and 60 km/h or less in towns; follow the signs, as radar checks are frequent.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Morocco?

Roughly €25–45 per day for an economy car and €60–120 for a 4x4, depending on season and insurance.

Can I take a rental car to the Sahara?

Yes on paved roads to Merzouga or Zagora. Off-road desert tracks require a 4x4 and experience — or a driver.
