Best Time to Visit Morocco (2026): Month-by-Month Weather & Season Guide

Sunny Moroccan landscape in spring, the best season to visit Morocco

Quick answer

The best time to visit Morocco is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when most regions have warm days and cool nights. Summer suits the Atlantic coast and the Atlas Mountains but is very hot inland and in the Sahara; winter is sunny and mild in Marrakech and the south but cold at night, with snow in the mountains.

Morocco has a climate for every season — the trick is matching the season to the regions you want to see. Our team plans trips all year; here is how we advise travellers.

The short answer by region

Region Best months Avoid / be careful
Marrakech & Fes Mar–May, Sep–Nov Jul–Aug heat
Sahara (Merzouga, Zagora) Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov Jul–Aug (40 °C+), cold Dec–Jan nights
High Atlas (Imlil, Toubkal) Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct Snow Dec–Mar (great for views, hard for treks)
Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir) All year; best May–Oct Windy in summer at Essaouira
North (Chefchaouen, Tangier) Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct Rainy Dec–Feb

Morocco month by month

January–February. Sunny, mild days (about 18–20 °C in Marrakech), cold nights, snow on the Atlas. Great value, quiet monuments. The desert is beautiful but nights drop near 0 °C — our camps provide heavy blankets. Almond trees bloom in the Atlas valleys in February.

March–April. Our favourite time. Green countryside, flowers, the Ourika and Ouzoud waterfalls in full flow, and pleasant temperatures everywhere. Easter is busy; book early.

May. Warm and bright. The Rose Festival in Kalaat M'Gouna (Valley of Roses) usually takes place in May, on the road to the Sahara.

June. Hot in the afternoons inland; perfect in the mountains and on the coast.

July–August. Very hot in Marrakech, Fes and the desert. Moroccan families travel to the coast. If you come, plan sightseeing early, rest at midday, enjoy the Atlas — a day trip to the Ourika Valley is 8–10 °C cooler — and take desert camel rides at sunset and sunrise.

September. Still hot early in the month, then increasingly pleasant. Date harvest season begins in the south.

October–November. Excellent all over the country: warm days, clear skies, ideal desert conditions. Half-term holidays make late October busy.

December. Mild days and cool nights; Christmas and New Year are peak season in Marrakech and the desert.

Best time for the Sahara desert

Spring and autumn give the best balance: warm afternoons for the camel trek and comfortable nights in the camp. Winter is fine with warm clothes and offers the clearest skies for stargazing. In summer we start the drives early and schedule the camels at sunset. Plan your route with how many days you need for a Sahara tour, then book the 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech.

Ramadan and holidays

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year; in 2027 it is expected from about early February to early March. Life slows in the day and becomes festive after sunset; tours run normally. Eid al-Adha brings Moroccan family travel, so book transport early around those dates.

Our local recommendation by trip type

  • First trip, 7–10 days (cities + Sahara): mid-March to mid-May, or late September to mid-November. You get warm afternoons in Marrakech and Fes, comfortable camel treks and desert nights cool enough for a blanket.
  • Beach and surf: October to April for waves at Taghazout; June to September for calm, warm beach days in Agadir.
  • Hiking and Toubkal: June to early October for snow-free summits; April–May for flowers in the valleys.
  • Budget travellers: late January–February and early June, outside school holidays, when riads offer their best prices.
  • Photographers: autumn for golden light and clear air; February for almond blossom against snowy peaks.

Whatever the season, keep one flexible day: desert winds, mountain snow or a cancelled balloon flight are easier to absorb with a buffer.

Prices and crowds

The busiest and most expensive periods are Easter, late October, Christmas–New Year and some European school holidays. For the best value, travel in late January–February, early March, May–June or November.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit Morocco?

April and October are often considered the best months overall: warm but not hot in Marrakech and Fes, comfortable desert nights and green landscapes in April.

Is Morocco too hot in summer?

Inland cities and the desert regularly pass 40 °C in July and August. The Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir) and the High Atlas stay much cooler, so summer trips work if you plan around the heat.

Is it worth visiting Morocco in winter?

Yes. Days are sunny and mild in Marrakech and the south, prices are lower outside the Christmas holidays, and the snowy Atlas is beautiful. Desert nights are cold, so bring warm layers.

Should I avoid Morocco during Ramadan?

No. Tourist services work normally; some local restaurants close at lunchtime and the pace slows during the day, but evenings are lively and welcoming.
